During a famine, a five-year-old girl named Mia is abandoned at the foot of Apricot Mountain by her parents, who value sons over daughters. She is rescued by a limping hunter, Victor Chase, and his ailing wife. When the wife falls gravely ill and requires a millennium-old ginseng root to survive, Mia uses her unique ability to communicate with animals to guide her adoptive father into the mountains to find the cure.
